Pakistan’s textile sector has questioned the credibility of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s PKR180bn textile package after the finance ministry allocated a sum of PKR4bn to fund it. At a press conference attended by representatives of all the leading associations, the textile sector rejected the 2017-18 budget due to “meagre” allocations and an increase in income tax and sales tax rates. India’s Ministry of Textiles is in the process of finalising draft guidelines of its National Textiles Policy, which will be sent to the union cabinet for approval next month. As many as ten value-added Pakistan textile associations have unanimously decided to observe a ‘Black Day’ and observe a strike for an indefinite period immediately after Eid. They want the immediate release of PKR180bn funds from the government’s textile package, immediate payment of Exporters Refund Claims, withdrawal from the Gas Infra-Structure Development Cess (GIDC), levelling of gas and electricity prices with regional competitors, and a zero-rating policy for the textile industry. Turkey’s Ipeker Textile claims to have become the world’s first producer of vegan fabric. After completing an approval process in Switzerland and Germany, the fabric was granted the ‘V-Label’ from the European Vegetarian Union (EVU). According to Ipeker Textile, which exports its products to more than 100 clients in 52 different countries, there are no animal ingredients or proteins in any of the 146 different types of fabric it produces.
