  • The Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) has appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw the hike in VAT on petrol and diesel due to its impact on the textile industry. SIMA says the textile industry in the state is already at a disadvantage due to the spinning sector spending around 6 crore per kg to procure the raw material from upcountry markets, and another 4 crore per kg to sell the yarn in those markets, while other states enjoy huge incentives.   • Bangladesh’s High Court has ordered the owners of 154 tannery factories at Hazaribagh in the capital Dhaka to deposit BDT30.85 as arrear fines to the treasury within two weeks for polluting the environment as a consequence of repeated failure of the owners to relocate their tannery factories to Savar.   • Bangladeshi corporations, including Small and Medium Enterprises, in the country’s garment sector have the potential to expand into Chinese mainland, according to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). Director Johnny Wan said the HKTDC can work as a platform to forge stronger trade links between Bangladesh and Hong Kong, and encouraged Bangladeshi companies to attend its trade fairs. The total trade value between Bangladesh and Hong Kong amounted to nearly US$1.7bn in 2016. DHAKA TRIBUNE
  • A committee, tasked by the Textiles Commissioner of India, has proposed a uniform unit of weight for the domestic and international cotton trade. So far, cotton has been traded in different weight units at different levels of the value chain, and in contrasting growing regions in the country. The group, which comprises of representatives from the cotton trade, stakeholders, exporters and Cotton Corporation of India (CAI), has recommended a uniform unit, of kilos or tonnes. A decision is expected to be made at the next board meeting of the Cotton Advisory Board (CAB). THE HINDU
