HanesBrands buys eco-friendly textile finishing systems

HanesBrands, one of the world's largest underwear and activewear apparel manufacturers, has invested in a number of new textile finishing systems to help achieve its environmental sustainability goals.

HanesBrands, one of the world’s largest underwear and activewear apparel manufacturers, has invested in a number of new textile finishing systems to help achieve its environmental sustainability goals.

The company will take 19 Precision Application Systems from Baldwin Technology Company Inc, with a textile finishing technology that allows for accurate and controlled placement and therefore, reduced use of end-of-line chemicals and water. Hanes says the move will help achieve its goals and will improve output through greater flexibility, fewer production steps and increased uptime.

Mike Abbott, HanesBrands global director of research and innovation, said the technology optimises productivity while reducing environmental impact.

“During the evaluation period of the system, we have had outstanding results in productivity increase, and we can clearly see that this technology will make a great contribution to our future efficiency and sustainability savings,” he adds.

The contract includes an option to supply 15 additional Precision Application Systems.

HanesBrands’ innerwear and activewear apparel brands include Hanes, Champion, Playtex, Bali, Maidenform, JMS/Just My Size and Wonderbra. The company primarily operates its own manufacturing facilities around the world, and says more than 90% of the apparel units that it sells are made in its own plants or those of dedicated contractors.

The North Carolina-based firm has previously set significant environmental stewardship goals to reduce energy consumption and water use. Last year, it said it is moving closer to achieving its 2020 commitments as it revealed a reduction in its energy and water usage, and a further reduction in its carbon emissions.
