Two innovative material brands have collaborated on the development of what they say is a new category of blended down insulated fabric.
The new product combines Sorona high-performance fibres from DuPont Industrial Biosciences (DuPont) – which are made from renewable plant-based ingredients – with the Thindown fabric and technology to create a single, seamless sheet that offers warmth and breathable insulation, as well as drape and stretch for greater movement.
The blend of Sorona fibres and Thindown also overcomes several drawbacks associated with the use of traditional down filling. The combination can reduce cold spots and seepage with a single sheet of fabric versus traditional quilted sections, delivering greater warmth and breathability.
Additionally, with the use of bio-based Sorona fibres, the collaboration yields a more sustainable insulated material option versus traditional down, which comes from animal plumage, or nylon, which requires 40% more energy to produce.
“We are constantly exploring new opportunities to develop and market innovative solutions across industries, and this unique collaboration underscores that commitment to delivering on both high performance and sustainability in apparel,” says Renee Henze, global marketing director at DuPont Industrial Biosciences.
