Pakistan’s Punjab Government has allowed the reopening of textile mills across the region in a move that will help lift exports hit by the lockdown resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision is understood to have been made following a meeting by a delegation of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) with chief minister Usman Buzdar on 2 May. Textile businesses will now be responsible for following all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Covid-19.

At a press conference on Saturday, Adil Bashir, president of the Punjab division of APTMA, said a delegation of textile associations had called on the chief minister to brief him about the safety measures taken by the sector to avoid the spread of novel coronavirus at factory premises, according to Pakistan publication The News.

He added that members had already adopted all precautionary measures at mills during the processing of orders by providing masks, sanitisers and other PPE, besides observing complete cleanliness.

A statement published on the Punjab Government’s website on 1 May reads: “A delegation of All-Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA), led by its patron-in-chief Gohar Ijaz, met with chief secretary Punjab Jawwad Rafique Malik and informed him about the problems being faced by export-oriented textile industry in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

“The chief secretary assured the delegates of full cooperation from the Punjab government and said that all possible step would be taken to resolve the problems of textile industry.”
