Imports of men’s and boys’ manmade fibre knit shirts and women’s and girls’ knit shirts and blouses from China into the US saw the biggest growth in volume across all clothing categories between 2010 and 2016, according to a new report.

The data is included in the eighth annual report on US textile and apparel imports from China, released by the US International Trade Commission (USITC) as part of a request made ahead of the lifting of safeguard quotas back in 2008.

The formal textile and apparel import monitoring programme was introduced following calls from the House Ways and Means Committee, with the aim of watching import levels and prices in a bid to pre-empt any sudden surges in imports when restrictions were lifted.

The data has since been published on a bi-weekly basis on the USITC website, and the latest report – ‘Textile and Apparel Imports from China: Statistical Reports, Annual Compilation 2016’ – is a compilation of these bulletins.

Data is shown on an annual and quarterly basis, by category and by Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) 10-digit subheadings.

According to the latest report, the import volume of men’s & boys’ MMF knit shirts, and women’s & girls’ MMF knit shirts & blouses surged 91.9% between 2010 and 2016 to 50.37m dozen units last year.
