Leather chemicals and coatings company Stahl has inked a deal with product authentication business Applied DNA Sciences to accelerate the use of molecular tagging in leather supply chains.

The two parties met in the Netherlands today (12 April) to sign a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under which they will evaluate molecular tagging of process chemicals and coatings using Stahl’s products as a point of entry into supply chains for Applied DNA’s molecular tags. Stahl will provide technical expertise to the company relating to the process chemicals used in leather manufacturing.

The MOU is expected to be followed by a definitive agreement.

“We see a bright future for molecular tagging. Leather is just one of many industries which could benefit by having the capability to improve traceability,” says Michael Costello, director of sustainability at Stahl. “As a process chemical manufacturer, we are a logical point of entry into a whole range of supply chains for Applied DNA’s molecular tags.”

Dr James Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA, adds: “Stahl’s global sales and support footprint, coupled with broad access to its customer base that spans global brands and their supply chains, makes it an ideal partner through which to expand, implement and support our CertainT authentication and traceability platform. We believe this partnership should accelerate our entry into the leather market. We look forward to a long and productive relationship with Stahl.”

The DNA-based CertainT platform can be used to identify, tag, test and track products to help assure authenticity, origin, traceability, sustainability, and quality.

Earlier this week, Applied DNA Sciences said it supported a move by US President Donald Trump to tackle the entry of fake goods into the country – especially via online marketplaces.

This latest move comes after Applied DNA Sciences last year teamed up with Eurofins BLC Leather Technology Center to support the commercial implementation of its SigNature T-based leather traceability system.
