North, Central American yarn makers launch YarnProof origin verification

A group of 10 polyester filament yarn manufacturers from North and Central America has introduced YarnProof, an origin verification system powered by FibreTrace technology.

The system, launched on 13 October, provides brands, manufacturers, and regulators with the capability to physically validate the provenance of polyester filament yarn manufactured in the region.

YarnProof embeds an invisible tracer directly into the polyester filament yarn during the extrusion process. The tracer remains in the yarn as it moves through the value chain and into finished goods, enabling its origin to be checked at any stage.

Verification can be conducted in real time by authorised users using a FibreTrace handheld scanner, which detects the tracer in materials from yarn to the final product. Each scan generates a “verification event” linking the material to supporting records on production and sourcing.

FibreTrace stated that YarnProof has been adopted to address calls for enhanced traceability, particularly with respect to the “yarn-forward” requirements mandated under trade agreements such as CAFTA-DR and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

These trade regulations stipulate that textiles and apparel must demonstrate substantial regional content and origin to qualify for preferential trade terms.

The manufacturers participating in YarnProof are Aquafil O’Mara, CS America, CS Central America, Nan Ya Plastics America, Premiere Fibers, Skytex México, Tecnología Textil Avanzada, Textufil, Unifi Manufacturing, and United Textiles of America.

The group said the initiative is intended to offer a coordinated industry response to compliance demands and market needs for physical supply chain verification.

FibreTrace founder and owner Danielle Statham said: “We commend the polyester filament yarn manufacturers across North and Central America for coming together to lead this. To our knowledge, this is the first regional group of fibre producers to collaborate at this scale to strengthen their position through physical verification.

“By collectively adopting physical verification of materials, they are moving beyond individual origin claims and creating a shared verification framework that connects physical evidence with supporting production and sourcing records. They are not simply telling the market where their fibre comes from — they are giving the market a way to verify it.”
